Curriculum
At Malbank we will develop the whole child by giving all of our students' choices and opportunities in life so that they can leave us to become the best that they can be, as they make a positive contribution to others and to society.
At Malbank our curriculum design is based on the Head, Heart, Hand model. This is adopted in KS3 and KS4 and provides clarity indicating the key knowledge & skills and how the curriculum links to personal development and the real world.
Careful consideration has been given to sequencing in curriculum design, ensuring that the HHH curriculum builds on prior learning and links to future learning. This is demonstrated in an at the glance curriculum overview as shown in the example below from History.
The HHH curriculum is consistent within departments, ensuring all teachers, students and parents are aware of the key knowledge and skills. An example of how this is shared with all stakeholders is below:
The Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The HHH curriculum ensures coverage of the National Curriculum.
Students study:
English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, A Modern Foreign Language (German, French or Spanish), Art, Dance, Drama, IT, Music, Technology & PE.
In year 9 students are supported in the options process by the Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum), the Head of Upper School, The Year 9 Progress Manager, their form tutor and the independent careers guidance councillor. Students and parents are supported to make choices for the KS4 programme of study so that pupils can secure the most appropriate outcomes for their next stage in education and training.
The Key Stage 4 Curriculum
Key stage 4 provides a broad and balanced curriculum that allows all pupils an increasingly personalised choice of study pathways. In Year 10, pupils can follow a traditional pathway of predominately level 2 qualifications from 4 option pools, including GCSE and vocational qualifications. All students have the opportunity to achieve the EBacc qualification
Post 16
Post 16, pupils have access to a wide range of level 3 qualifications within 4 option pools. The majority of students study 3 level 3 qualifications in year 12. In addition, all Y12 pupils have access to level 3 qualifications in the form of the EPQ, as well as level 2 qualifications in English Language and Mathematics and a wide variety of enrichment activities.
